Boots. Field notebook. Chargers. Then five dense, irregular specimens sitting in the scan like geological punctuation marks. The operator leans closer. The geologist deploys the carefully neutral expression reserved for moments that begin with, “Can you explain these?”

It is funny because it is familiar—but it also reflects a practical field reality. To us, a specimen carries context: location, lithology, alteration, structure and the reason it was worth keeping. On a security monitor, that entire story collapses into an unexplained dark shape.
A little preparation can make the conversation shorter: pack specimens accessibly, keep their context clear, and know the relevant transport and declaration requirements before reaching the terminal. “They’re rocks” may be accurate, but it is rarely the complete answer.
